UNIVERSITY OF TOLEDO DINING FACILITIES
TOLEDO, OHIO
2004
2004 AIA TOLEDO HONOR AWARD
The new University of Toledo dining facilities were designed with a hierarchy of spaces for students to dine, study, and socialize where technology is integrated throughout. The three venues each provide a reenergizing spot for students, faculty, and staff to interact, rejuvenate, and connect.
Parks Residence Dining is a series of spaces that circulate around the existing kitchen in a loop. Materials include glow-in-the-dark green glass, stainless steel, wire grid ceilings, stained wood, and a custom design gate. The materials, furniture, and architecture evoke a modern spirit of planes which define the serving, dining, and social spaces which sequence around the core.
South Union Dining is a long linear space which features a 115-foot long stainless steel wall that defines the Servery and a variety of unique seating areas. Other materials include blue metal soffit panels, stainless steel, sand blasted glass screens and stretch canvas ceilings. The spaces create a modernistic spirit for the student to dine, study, and socialize for long periods of time.
Rocky’s Lounge is defined by a glass fragmented cube that orients the space in the newly renovated nightclub atmosphere. Materials that compliment the thick sandblasted glass walls are perforated stainless steel panels and counters, wire grid ceiling, and dark stained wood panels. The fire pit grille food preparation and embedded gas fireplace contrasts with the cool glass atmosphere of the cube. Students can lounge within the cube or be exposed to a variety of other residual spaces circulating around the cube.
