TOLEDO LUCAS COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY
2006 AIA Toledo Citation Award
The South Toledo Lucas County Branch Library is a new 8,000 SF Library that is situated on an urban triangular site. Like many of the older buildings in the neighborhood, the new library holds the street edge and strengthens a potentially decaying urban fabric in the area. The conceptual parti is designed around a central indoor courtyard that provides the organizational framework for the working library as well as a continuous clerestory that sheds natural light into the central space. Three architectural elements anchor the corners of the triangular scheme; the Entrance, the Community Meeting Room, and the Cultural Lounge. The elements have translucent roofs and are canted to act as beacons in the neighborhood, identified with bright colors to abstractly reflect the predominantly Hispanic community. Perimeter windows provide natural light and visibility into spaces which are fluid and open to each other. A strong identity and unified civic presence has been created with the library space actively used in the neighborhood.
